Glen is right that knowing your measurements is the most important thing.

Also, pay attention to how the garment is fitted- for instance, most babydolls require an accurate measurement of your bodice, but are more forgiving in terms of hips and waist measurements. Teddies require accurate measurements of bodice and waist; chemises, on the other hand, are generally meant to be loose, and so there's more room for variance.

It is good to note that plus size women are recognized and the lingerie manufacturers are trying to make them feel comfortable. It is always better to measure with a third person (preferably your partner) - to get the correct measurement.

I think the most important part is knowing your size. I have talked to many ladies that shop online and are frustrated because what they think their size is and what the actual number is are two different things. As a result they spend lots of time and money returning items.
