It does not matter what our body size or shape, women are truly amazing creatures. And yet, one only has to glance in a magazine or wander through a shopping mall to realise that, for the most part, fashion designers have ignored the needs and (more importantly) desires of women who are as beautifully unique and wonderful as an exotic bird or rare and fragrant flower.

I call this group “women of Style and Substance”; we each have our own personalities that set us apart from each other, but we also have our curves and rather than hiding under layers upon layers of fabric, we should embrace our voluptuous selves; enhance our physical assets and subtly disguise our perfectly imperfect flaws.

Beautiful clothing shouldn’t end at a size 14, and so I invite you to become a woman of Style and Substance. We offer exquisite and affordable garments, specifically designed for the female shape and in amazing colours and fabrics.

The Autumn/Winter fashion season is at its best. The holidays are just around the corner, so we thought we would update you with information on the hottest trends this season. Straight off the catwalk, follow these fashion rules to stand out during the holidays and all season long.

Comfortable Tailoring

This is the smart and sexy look; a girly and playful but elegant office combination. Tailored styles and tweed fabrics are a perfect match. Detailing has gone military this season; however the modern tailoring gives this particular look a sleek and womanly twist. Torrid have perfect combination for you ladies who would like to experiment with such items.

Feminine 50’s

Back to the days where minis were unheard of, ladies dressed girly and accessories were big! Back to knee length dresses, nipped-in waists, cool belts and big beads. To give this retro image a touch of glamour and glam team is up with bold accessories, choose colors that stand out like purple and add in a touch of glitter or silver. There is definitely no way you cannot look sexy in this retro housewife look. Visit Zafique to see for yourselves.

Sophisticated 70’s

Remember the 70’s. Dress big and chic by teaming up 70’s style fashion with luxury fabrics, knits and accessories that stand out. Cape-styled coats are in and will keep you warm and snug. IGIGI will satisfy your appetite and your curves, should you want to go retro.

Peasant Prints

Think gypsies; a mix of peasant flair, things out of fairy tales and chic. Prints are casual but cool and feminine. To ass a touch of glamour to your look, if this style is your things, add sequins. Take a look at Alight, who has gone big on this type of look this season.

We have given you a taste of the basic that are in and ‘happening’ this season. Make sure to add a touch of your own personality when applying these ideas and putting them into practice. As much as we love fashion we love to advocate individuality and style. Ladies shine!

by Donna Monday

Ever since Queen Nefertiti first lined her eyes with black coal, women have been using makeup to emphasize the beauty of their eyes. If you are looking for eye makeup tips or eye makeup ideas for a dramatic eye make up look for an evening out, or simply some free eye makeup tips to put on your “morning face”, you can start out by learning basic eye makeup application.

How to Apply Eye Makeup

Before applying eye makeup, it’s always a good idea to use a concealer to hide dark circles and wrinkles around the eyes. Choose a shade of concealer that’s slightly lighter than your natural skin tone. Don’t use too much and blend it in well.

Apply the eye shadow color in several thin layers, blend well. Put the sheer color on the center of your lid with a sponge applicator or pencil.

Next, brush up and out toward your brow, then nose. Use an eye brush if possible. Apply a deeper shade of color to the crease of your lid.

Highlight Your Eyes

To highlight eyes, add a lighter shade of the same color of eye makeup to your brow bone.

Outline and Define Eyes

Outline the top and bottom of your lids with an eyeliner pencil. You can make short, close little dots with your eyeliner instead of a straight line. Smudge the dots or line lightly from the inner corners to the outer corners, if you want a softer line.

Make Thick Eye Lashes

For great looking eyelashes, go over lashes first with an eyelash separator comb. Apply a thin coat of mascara to lashes (If you don’t have many lashes, you may want to do lashes individually). Re-comb your lashes immediately after you apply the mascara. Let them dry,

then repeat the process.

Removing Eye Makeup

Eye makeup should be removed with a cotton ball or swab that has been soaked in makeup remover. Makeup remover pads are good too.

Remember to be gentle and don’t rush. Be especially careful when removing mascara. You can gently rub the underside of the lashes until they come clean.

What’s hot in the plus size fashion scene this summer? This article is a short guide to what to wear, what colors to choose and what accessories to go for.

The sun is sizzling, and so will you this season! A lot of trendy, fun and colorful styles are in fashion at the moment: follow our guide which highlights what’s hot in the plus size fashion scene for summer 2005.

This summer it’s all about the subtle touches that give an outfit that extra something. Try and put in a touch of glitter into your style to give yourself some allure and shine.

Halters are back in girls. Do not feel shy to expose those shoulders! Just make sure you are protected with a good sun-protection lotion, this is very important ladies. Spin around in trendy summer styles by mixing and matching up different items with halter-neck tops. You can see a good example of a perfect colored halter top at Torrid.com: in stock at the moment they have a brown halter-neck, which can be easily matched up with a pair of jeans, trousers, skirt or capri pants!

Green is a particularly popular color this season, so go for chocolate, gold and forestry colors which can easily be matched with green.

Accessories should be an important part of your wardrobe this season also: be ready to stock up on some fun, exotic and feathery earrings, necklaces and bracelets. What’s very popular are peacock feather earrings.

And don’t forget those trendy pair of metal sunglasses! Besides protecting your eyes from the blazing sun, I think sunglasses are a vital part of a summer outfit, as they complete a look and style. Retro and metal styled sunglasses are sizzling hot this season.

by: Vicki Louise

How many times is it written in the press, and mentioned on the news that more than 80% of women are wearing the wrong sized bra? Frequently? Well, are you? Do you know whether your bra fits correctly?

Is it important? Do we really need to be that bothered? Well, the answer really has to be yes. Younger women can get away without wearing a bra, or wearing one that doesn’t support them properly, as their young muscles and tendons keep things in place. But this doesn’t go on forever, and as we age, we are all too keenly aware of the dreaded droop! And anyway, an ill fitting bra under a T-shirt or close fitting top is just so ugly.

There are other, potentially more serious problems though, especially if you have a curvy figure. Breasts that aren’t properly supported can lead to all sorts of problems with your back, shoulders, skin irritations and self-esteem. If you have never been properly fitted, why not try it? You may well find the bras you buy in the future will completely change how you carry yourself, bringing your shoulders back and boosting your self-esteem considerably.

Although too many women are wearing bras that do not fit them correctly, there really is an over reliance on consistently buying the same size. We go into a store, are measured and told we are a 38G and off we go and buy only 38G bras.

It can often be just as well to throw away the tape measure and keep trying on bras until you get one that fits properly. If you rely too heavily on the tape measure, you stick in the comfort zone and continue to buy the same size. But there are far too many variables now in bra manufacture to be able to rely on that ‘size’ as a constant. Here are just a few:

1. The type of materials used
2. How the fabric is cut
3. The level of support/elasticity offered by the fabric
4. The design of the bra
5. The style of the bra (full cup, balconette, demi-bra, strapless, bustier etc )
6. Variations in sizing between brands
7. Variations in sizing conventions in different countries
8. Variables in the production process
9. Fashion sizing (i.e.: putting smaller sizes on the label than the garment actually is …)

…and all this before you even start to consider how your own body alters over the course of the day, the month, the year, or events such as pregnancy, measurable weight loss or gain, or surgery.

Therefore, the best way of ensuring you get a correct fitting bra is to try it on yourself. There are many guides to buying the correct size – some rely entirely on the tape measure, but many more are now moving towards the advice of trying on until the fit is right.

If the bra is right for you, it will:

1. Feel comfortable – there will be no red marks or wheals
2. The back band will be parallel with the front band
3. If it is underwired, the underwires will sit comfortably at the back of the breast without digging in. The front of the underwires will sit comfortably between your breasts and rest against your breast bone.
4. The cups will be full – not overflowing, and not sagging
5. The straps will not cut in, and they won’t slip down.

When you do find a bra that fits properly, why not buy another one! There’s nothing wrong with having a range of different ‘sizes’. Bras from the same brands tend to be the same size, there will be different cup sizes in European and American makes and you may need different cup and back sizes to cope with changes in your body shape each month.

So, when you have bought the right bra for you, follow the care instructions to keep it doing its job as long as possible. Bras usually only have an effective life of around 5/6 months and will lose some elasticity each time they are washed. You will probably need to alter the straps and the hook position over that time to compensate for this.

Yes, there are too many women wearing the wrong sized bra.
Yes, it matters.
Yes, it is important to ensure the right fit.
No, you don’t have to rely on the tape measure.
No, you don’t have to buy the same size every time because you have been told to.

There is so much to choose from, enjoy trying on! Good luck in your search.

The Plus Size Dress You Should NOT Overlook

A few months back I finally took the plunge and grabbed myself my very own Kiyonna Scalloped Boudoir Lace Dress, and in this review I wanted to share with you my experiences with this plus size dress.

If you often shop for plus size clothes online, then you are probably familiar with the designer Kiyonna. They have been around since 1996, providing curvy women with sophisticated as well as trendy plus size clothing.

Kiyonna have a number of signature pieces which they have carried and perfected along the years, and one of these best sellers is the Scalloped Boudoir Lace Dress. But anyhow, that’s just some background information I wanted to give you. Now let me tell you how and why I came to choose this dress…

I have a few weddings to attend this year, mostly morning weddings, so I was looking for something sassy yet chic and something that will last throughout the years. Something that I can wear over and over, year after year, and still feel like I’m on trend. So I was after a classic piece.

So I searched and search online, and had been eying the Kiyonna Lace Dress for weeks. But somehow I wasn’t sure… I don’t wear lace very often, in fact I never really wear lace, so the thought of an all round lace dress was a bit daunting. However I read a lot of rave reviews about this particular one, and I could see this dress lasting throughout the years, so I took the plunge and went ahead with it!

Kiyonna’s delivery was spot on as usual; this wasn’t my first Kiyonna purchase so I expected to get the dress pretty quickly even though I am located in Europe. And in fact the dress arrived within around 5 working days. Fantastic!

I truly fell in love with the dress as soon as I opened the package. The dress looks amazing just off the hanger, so I was anxious to see how it would look on moi! The fabric feels very silky and soft; although it is a lace dress, it isn’t the hard type of lace, so even just running your hand over the fabric feels luxurious.

I tried the dress on, and was glad I got the sizing right again! I always buy the same size from Kiyonna, and so far everything I purchased has fit well. I was worried as some styles tend to run smaller or larger at times, though as yet, this has not been the case with my Kiyonna purchases.

I loved the look of this dress immediately upon wearing it. It gives you a very, very chic and classic look, yet the plunging V-neckline, and the nude lining especially, help give this dress a sassy and sexy feel. Also, the lace scalloped trim throughout the dress is a gorgeous detail. I showed it to my husband and he was wowed! So that was already enough for me.

Since this is a pretty hugging dress, I felt more comfortable wearing it with a body-shaper underneath, just to make sure everything it smoothed out as it should be. Once I tried it on with the shaper, it looked even better (although this dress would still look great without a shaper).

I wore this dress the first time round to a friend’s morning well. I paired it up with a gold pearl jewelry set, which complemented the nude lining very well. The pearl necklace was pretty long so I tied it up in a way that it sits right on the V-neck line. (You can see in the photos the way I did this.) The V-neck line of this dress is pretty low, so this is a good trick to add some extra coverage in that essential place, in case you’re uncomfortable showing off too much skin. I personally did this to shorten the length of the necklace.

As for shoes I opted for my trusty Evans black peep toe high heels shoes, and wore a matching black satin clucth-bag. To add a touch of pasazz to the entire look I found a chic brown birdcage fascinator, adorned with ivory flowers and feathers. I thought that topped the outfit off pretty well! I wore the same ensemble to a wedding I attended last weekend in Sicily, Italy.

Expect to get reactions when you wear this dress. And I mean positive reactions! Truly, I had never received so many compliments ever in my life with any other dress, well expect perhaps my wedding dress! He he

If you are looking for something classic, that you can wear over and over, something that works well both in the morning and evening, plus something with a WOW factor, then you definitely need to consider the Kiyonna Boudoir Lace Dress.

This Scalloped Boudoir Lace Dress is available in sizes 0X to 5X and comes in three different shades… black with nude lining, black with black lining, and chocolate. It retails for $158, which I personally think is a steal for the quality you get in this dress.

Take a deep breath. Smell that crisp autumn air, the sweet caramel apples, those camo print tees. That last one threw you, didn’t it? Yeah, you are still sniffing the air for caramel. Military style jackets and tops are marching into every women’s department from Dillards to Target. One of my personal “must lust” items for the fall is Lane Bryant’s military denim jacket. I dare say it can be sneaked into the office with a skirt and sexy camisole. You could pair this bad boy with almost anything, from that skirt to bootcut jeans, even khakis. Fashion Bug also carries jackets with a military flare that will spice up you closet without putting a damper on your bank account.

In your quest to be army chic, you do not want to look like a kid playing in their dad’s hunting gear. In other words, head to toe camouflauge only works if you are actually enlisted (and we salute those who protect us). Put down that orange ski cap before I make you drop and give me twenty! Where was I? And pace yourself at the local army surplus store. That authentic sailor’s hat may look like a perfect fashion accessory in the dim light. But looks can be deceiving. Better yet, step out of that musty building quickly and find your nearest Fashion Bug. You can find some great looking camo print tops, many with floral screen-prints and rhinestone embellishments for an added feminine touch. Cargo pants or a utility skirt can make a great addition to your outfit, and your closet! Many come with belts, or substitute your own for an “only you” unique look!

What about boots, you may ask? Boots can be tricky sometimes…the right pair can earn you kudos and envious glances. The wrong pair, however, can have you looking like that army surplus mannequin’s (you know the one) groupie. For ladies, I believe it is a safe bet to completely avoid combat boots, oh and black Converse All-Stars. There was a time when finding any plus size shoes, not to mention boots was almost a fairy tale. But now, online stores like www.zappos.com (free shipping and 365 day return) and www.bananashoes.com (sizes up to 14) offer so many varieties and widths. For the ultra comfortable, ever popular Cloudwalkers you just need find the closest Avenue store, or visit www.avenue.com for all their styles.

When shopping for jackets and blazers, make sure to try on a few different sizes; so you can get the best fit. Do not be afraid to ask a sales associate for assistance. As a former retail employee I can assure you, we do not work on commission…we will be honest. Regardless of what the current trend is, you always want to look your best. Keep the rhinestones to a minimum and absolutely no whistles…that is just tacky..

Sometimes it is not so easy to identify the best clothes and accessories which would make the most of our figures. Choosing swim wear and swimsuits often proves to be even trickier. The following article, provided by Swimsuits For All, gives us hints on what the ideal swimsuit of choice should be, according to the different body shapes.

Swimsuits For All feature one of the biggest collections of plus size swimwear to be found online, whilst providing a hassle free online purchasing experience, making shopping for swimsuits online a breeze.

Triangle Shaped Body:

Your hips are wider than your bust. We suggest looking for a swimsuit with a bright colored or patterned top to create the look of cleavage with dark bikini briefs to minimize the butt and hip area. You can also opt for swim-dresses or skirtinis to help cover your problem area.

Hourglass Figure:

Your hips and shoulders are equal width with a defined waist. This body shape is the ideal. You can wear almost anything. An hourglass figure can try on swimsuits that will help to accentuate the wait. You can also look for vivid colors and patterns to keep the eye moving.

Rectangle Shaped Body:

The width of your body from shoulders to hips is relatively the same. You should look for swimsuits that have detailing or a pattern around the waistline to create the illusion of a curvy silhouette. Look for a swimsuit that will help define the waist.

Inverted Triangle Shaped Figure:

Your shoulders are wider than your hips. Women with this body shape can get away with wearing as many halter tops as they want. The straps help to cut the width of the shoulders. Also look for a skirtini that will help to create the illusion of hips.

Don’t forget to add a stylish cover-up to your beach wardrobe! You never know when you are going to need one.

Taramosalata

What you need:
• 1 medium potato (boiled)
• 1 clove of garlic
• 225 gr. cod roe – usually found in tins
• Juice of 1 lemon
• Some parsley
• 2 tablespoons olive oil

What to do:
Place the potato in the blender and whilst the blade is still running, add the roe, lemon and parsley. Now drizzle the oil a little at a time to make sure that your dip will not be too oily. Once the dip is done, allow it to set and serve with some hot bread or crackers.

Here are some fresh and tasty dip recipes you can try this summer. These are great as an entrée or just a snack and are especially ideal to spice up a BBQ!

Mash the avocado with the soured cream until fairly smooth. Mix in all of the remaining ingredients and serve straight away, or chill in the fridge for a few hours.
