Should Plus Size Women Wear Stripes?
Many curvy girls think that they cannot pull of stripes. However, this could not be further from the truth because women of all sizes can pull off stripes if they are proportioned correctly and styled right. Stripes are just like any other pattern, and in moderation any woman can wear them.
Find the Right Stripes
If you are plus sized, it is best to look for stripes that are vertical and thin. This will give you the illusion of a longer and leaner silhouette. However, if you have want to sport horizontal stripes, then make sure that the stripes are thin as well to keep your middle area from looking too large or exaggerated.
Many do not know that you can use stripes to camouflage and highlight. For example, you can wear a thick horizontal stripe top to emphasize a smaller bust line and waist. However, you can also pull on a skirt with vertical stripes to make your lower half look smaller. Alternating small and large stripes can also be flattering when you use different materials and colors. If you want a striped item that never goes out of style, then think French boat-neck tops or sweaters for very Parisian look.
Picking and Styling Your Stripes
Your stripes do not need to come in a standard black and white combo. Look for multicolored stripes or two tones not in the classic colors. This will make your look a little more unique than a regular striped dress or top. You should never mix stripes with a different pattern. This will make your outfit look too busy, and draw attention to your size. There is nothing wrong with accentuating your curves, but you do not want them to be on full display. Choose fabric that is not too clingy such as jersey or knit. Stick to cotton pique or even chiffon if you want to work the stripe trend.
You can wear two different stripes on the top and bottom. They just need to be cohesive if it is going to work. Look at plus size editorial magazines for ideas. You will be able to see how stylists and models are working this trend with little to no effort. It does not take a genius to figure out this trend if you want to rock it. Just have confidence in your look and stay away from too tight or sheer fabrics!
Alternatives for Stripes
Use your imagination when it comes to accessories. If you really feel uncomfortable wearing stripes, then give a striped handbag or pair of heels a chance. This way you can stay on trend without feeling uncomfortable. Never wear anything that makes you feel anything less than your best. Stripes do not have to heartbreaking as this is a fun trend that should be easy to pull off. Thus, if you are really feeling nervous about sporting them, then stick to accessories. You will feel more confident, and look much. much better.
As you can see, there is no reason a curvy woman like you cannot pull off stripes. The key to any look is rocking it with confidence. There is no trend that you cannot try if you wear it with the right amount of swagger. Just remember to keep your stripes skinny, and you will look amazing.
