A+ Wardrobe Tips for Curvy College Girls

Plus Size Fashion Tips for College GirlsGuest Post by Carol Montrose

Perhaps you’ve heard that real women have curves. The truth is that women come in all shapes and sizes, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they receive equal representation when it comes to clothing styles and sizes. The curvy girls out there know that it can be hard to assemble a sensational wardrobe when you’re nowhere near a slender size 2 (or even a 10). And when you’re getting ready to head to college, you want a closet full of garments that help you look like the serious student and the adult woman that you are. So here are a few tips to help you find the individual pieces that will have you looking your best on campus.

    1. Fit Matters

Did you know that wearing baggy, oversized clothes will only hide your curves and make you look bigger? So ditch the boxy t-shirts and sweats that you live in during the lazy days of summer and go for clothing that is both fitted and flattering. Some of the sexiest women around have curves for miles and they’re not afraid to show them. Christina Hendricks, Queen Latifah, an Amber Riley (just to name a few) are all proof positive that it is possible to wear fitted outfits that show your curves and make you look fantastic.

    2. Jeans

This everyday item may be hard to shop for when you’re plus sized (or even just curvy). But with more companies creating “curvy” styles, you may have an easier time of it. Look for versions that have a straight leg or boot cut as well as a mid-rise (rather than a low-rise that could lead to a muffin top, even if you don’t have one normally). And always remember that a pair that fits everywhere but the waist can easily be taken in at an alterations shop; for a little extra cost you can have a pair of jeans that’s custom fitted.

    3. Tops

It’s all too easy to reach for a t-shirt when you’re late for class, but these shapeless garments will do nothing to help you look like a lady. Instead, seek tops that are still comfortable but offer a little added value. Consider jersey knit as an alternative to regular tees; it’s super comfy but drapes better than standard cotton tee material. Look for gathering or a band at the waist to emphasize your narrowest part, with a flare to the hip (no longer or shorter).

    4. The LBD

Don’t think that you have to squeeze into a smaller size in order to wear the little black dress. Every girl should have one in her closet, and the only requirement is that it makes you feel amazing. Of course, if it makes you look amazing, that’s a step in the right direction. So here are a couple of things to look for. The most figure-flattering shape will nip in at your natural waist and then flare out into an A-line skirt, effectively hiding any potential problem areas. You may also want to opt for a V-neck to elongate your neckline, a wide strap for extra support (of the girls) and a hemline that hits at or just above the knee (to accentuate the length of your legs. These are the hallmarks of the perfect LBD. Then class it up with some pumps and a pearl necklace or go casual with flats and a colorful cardigan.

    5. Accessories

Don’t underestimate the power of a few well-placed accessories to pull a look together. This could include jewelry, hair accessories, bags, shoes, and virtually anything that embellishes your outfit. Just be careful not to go overboard. Follow the old fashion adage; before you leave your dorm room, remove one piece of jewelry.

Queen Latifah Launches the Queen Collection on HSN

Shop the Queen Latifah Collection at HSN! Last Saturday 27th August, Queen Latifah launched her brand new clothing and accessory line, which she has aptly called the Queen Collection. This collection is now available exclusively through HSN (the Home Shopping Network).

This has been a long awaited collection; I know that many plus size women look up to Queen Latifah for her sense of style and confidence, so this Queen Collection will be very much welcome within the plus community! Having said that, I was slightly disappointed to see that the sizes of most items in the collection go up to just 3XL: this will surely leave some women disappointed, especially seeing the gorgeous styles available in this collection.

I’ve browsed around and so far I am loving the Suede Moto Jacket with leather trim and the Sequin Tim V-neck Tunic. I do hope more styles are added on to this collection, and more importantly it is expanded to cater for women sized over 3XL.

Besides sweaters, jackets, dresses, jeans, leggings and ponchos, the Queen Collection also includes a variety of stylish handbags and accessories.

So, what do you think of the long awaited Queen Collection?

5 Ways To Accessorize Your Little Black Dress

Kiyonna Little Black DressThe little black dress, or LBD as it is oftentimes referred to, is a staple item in every woman’s wardrobe. You will find an LBD in the majority of women’s closets, and for good reason. A little black dress can take you lots of places; it can be casual, can be perfect for a cocktail event or party, and it can also work for the office. The trick is knowing how to accessorize it well.

Let’s face it, every woman loves a little black dress because it also helps disguise any bumps, and is the perfect dress for those days when you’re feeling bloated.

To truly make the most of your little black dress, you have to know how to accessorize it. You can really create a completely different out every time you wear your little black dress, if you know how to accessorize it properly. So below are 5 ways how you can accessorize your little black dress to create a different outfit every time you wear it.

    1. Add a Belt

This is one of the easiest things you can do to spice up your little black dress, and it can also be the most effective a belt can really give a whole new look to your dress. You can wear a thin belt, in a striking color or even animal print. Though if you want to be bold wear a wide belt in a color such as red, or even in an animal print. Now that will really create a different look, and it will also flatter your figure as it will tuck in your waist, helping to create a more define look.

    2. Wear a Scarf

This is a trick I like to use when I need to add a little bit of chic flair to my little black dress, and this works very well for a sophisticated office look. Grab your favorite scarf, it can be a silk scarf or even a chiffon scarf, and wrap it around your neck. You can wrap it slightly tightly if you have a define neck, though if you’re like me and your neck isn’t really that long, I suggest you keep it loose. You can leave the loose end of the ‘tie’ to one side. Opt for a scarf with a bold color or print for a more striking look.

    3. Put On Bold Shoes

Now since I love shoes (my husband likes to call me a ‘shoe-aholic’) this is my very favorite way to accessorize a little black dress. Find a pair of high heeled bold color shoes, think of colors like blue, pink, red, green or orange. Actually, simply pick your favorite color! Or if you are really adventurous, pick a pair of animal print shoes. Now although I mentioned high-heeled shoes, if you are not comfortable with wearing them, you can opt for something more manageable like a kitten heel, that does the trick too. The important thing is to add that touch of bold color or print to your LBD.

    4. Choose a Striking Handbag

Now this idea is perfect for someone who doesn’t like wearing bold shoes, or prefers to wear simple flats with their little black dress. You can still add a touch of color, or even animal print, to your look just by wearing a striking handbag. Choose a small or larger style handbag depending on the event, though definitely choose one in a bold color.

    5. Wear a Chunky Necklace

If you prefer wearing jewelry, then this will come naturally to you. Wear a big chunky necklace with your little black dress. This will make you stand out from the crowd, and will help create a sophisticated look. Again, ideally go for something in a bold color, though something in silver or gold tone will also work wonderfully.

So there you go, 5 ways how you can easily accessorize your little black dress to create a stylish look. But remember, your little black dress is truly like a blank canvas. Be creative with how you wear your favorite LBD and do not be afraid to try out different things.
